Question: Soft Palate Function

Soft Palate Function

I'm looking up information on the soft palate and it's function as it pertains to speaking. All I've been able to find is that it closes off the nasal passages to produce the oral speech sounds and prevent the air from escaping through the nose during speech (hypernasal speech)....any help would be very very appreciated! I need to know ASAP....

The only sounds when the passage opens for are for the "m", "n" and the "ing" sounds. When the adnoids are removed sometimes they remove too much tissue and this causes an incomplete closure resulting in hypernasal speech. A cleft palate at birth needs to be repaired to help with speech and also to prevent food from coming through the nose. I hope this information helps!
