Does anyone know how widgets for facebook/myspace work/programmed? What makes a widget popular?

What makes a widget popular has to do with its practicalness, and it's ability to be viral.

I'd also take a look into using OpenSocial.
OpenSocial is a set of common application programming interfaces (APIs) for web-based social network applications, developed by Google. Applications implementing the OpenSocial APIs will be interoperable with any social network system that supports them, including features on sites such as Hi5.com,MySpace, Friendster and Orkut.

I don't use widgets much for facebook or myspace, but I use them for my mac and I think that the thing that makes them most popular in my eyes are the ones that are practical and useful. Something thats not going to be complicated to use.
