How do you stay from being nervous when saying a fromal speech without script?

When giving speeches/ presentations/ talks without notes I find that it's helpful to memorize a few "sub headings". It's extremely difficult to memorize 10 or 15 min of text, but if you can memorize 5 or 6 sub-topics, maybe a couple exact dates and numbers your other information should fall into place.

Practice saying it with your notes a few times. Don't try to use big/difficult vocabulary--- have formal language of course, but don't trip yourself up with phrases that don't come naturally.

Smile, talk slowly...really slowly it's ok to take breaths :)

and remember this... people are NOT going to judge you or critique you. Think of the times when you were an audience member... were you really paying 100% attention? Were you watching their every move? No one does that... to them you're just another person up there on the stage. Even though it's a big deal to you, sitting in your chair listening to someone is a common experience and they're not going to be hyper-aware of your mistakes :)

p.s. I'd recommend not trying jokes/ humor unless you're naturally a funny and charismatic person. It's better just to say what you're supposed to say than risk being funny and having no reaction.

If you are very stage shy there is no soild way to get rid of your neverousness. Honestly. But it you have a good "stand point" on what your tlaking about than you can just be confident in yourself. Stage fear derives from the fear of rejection or failure. You just have to realize that no one is perfect, all people fail its a part of life. Really the people who are juding you are not any better than you. =)
