A thesis statement provides a general direction for your paper. You must be able to give specific evidence in your paper for your thesis. There are different types of theses: some analyze the writings of others, while other theses provide an arguable viewpoint, etc. You must realize that everything you state after your thesis statement must in some way relate back to the statement. Also, you want to avoid being too general in a thesis statement. On the other hand, if you write a thesis that is TOO specific, you may not give yourself enough to write about. Overall, when writing a good thesis statement, you want to bring some sort of original thought to the reader.

The thesis statement is exactly that- a statement that you will set out to prove with examples and research throughout your essay. You will draw from this thesis in the topic sentences of your main paragraphs. You will refer to this thesis when you arrive at your conclusion.

Don't let the term "Thesis statement" scare you; it is just a fancy phrase for a one-sentence summary of what the main purpose or point of your paper will be. It lets your reader know early on exactly what your essay is going to be about -- it also helps keep you focused on your essay's main point. A good thesis is very specific; it is not just a general statement. What a thesis is NOT is a general statement or a simple announcement of the subject of your paper.

A thesis statement serves two purposes. The first is to help to define the focus of research as one looks for evidence to answer a question or to prove or disprove a point. The second purpose is to inform the reader of the viewpoint of the essay he/she is about to read, to provide a brief summary of the evidence that will be provided to support that viewpoint and to provide a road map for the organization for the writing of the essay.

A thesis statement is the main idea of a paper that tells the reader the basic idea of what they are about to read. It is a direct, specific point, rather than a general subject, that essentially sums up the paper in a single sentence. If you have been asked a specific question, your thesis statement should directly answer that question, to let the reader know how you are interpreting the subject matter that you are discussing. The easiest way to think about it is to summarize your whole paper in a single sentence in the first paragraph, so that the reader knows where you are going with the rest of the paper.
